Development of Eco-friendly Cathode Precursor for Lithium Secondary Battery

◇ Currently commercialized precursor manufacturing method for lithium secondary battery cathode is controlling chemical reaction speed by injecting excessive ammonia as a chelate agent. But that case causes air pollution problems during the reaction under high temperature (50 to 60°C) and has great disadvantages when it is releasing waste water containing ammonia, which has a huge effect on water pollution. Therefore, in order to solve this problem, ammonia in the wastewater must be treated, and the wastewater must be discharged after satisfying the legal regulation. But the processing cost is very high in that case , which serves as a major reason to lower the cost competitiveness of domestic products.

 ◇ In response, rov Co., Ltd has been developing new low-volatile organic compounds that offer low use quantity but strong chelating capabilities equivalent to ammonia, and has made steady efforts to develop eco-friendly precursors that have the same performance as conventional commercially available precursors.

◇ rov Co., Ltd has completed the development of three compound precursors using its own specialized eco-friendly precursors manufacturing method [Registration patent 10-2039336, PCT/KR2020/007249] and based on this technology, We can try various changes needed for future material development. Eco-friendly precursors with their own technology can be control particle size(D50) : 3 ~ 12μm and Tap Density: 0.9 ~ 2.2g/cc to satisfy various demands of customers.

◇ A self-evaluation of NCM811 active material with a precursor manufactured by eco-friendly method has been confirmed that there is no difference in performance from the precursor used by the conventional method.

  Non-coated NCM811 cathode materials after 1st sintering have the clean surface shape and stable structure, and results of battery test (Coin Half Cell, CCCV/C, 3.0-4.3V) showed a discharge capacity of 205 mAh/at 0.1C, high rate test (2C/0.1C) is maintained 88%efficiency.
